Two bright red walls filled with Vogue covers on the upper floor of Somerset House, what do they have in common? On these magazines, all the stylish hairdos are created by master hairstylist Sam McKnight.
Hair by Sam McKnight is the major exhibition celebrating the hairstylist’s 40-year career from the late 1970s to the current day. Known for his recognizable hairstyles for
Kate Moss, Linda Evangelista, Tilda Swinton and Princess Diana among others, the talented Mr. McKnight is a gifted hair guru. He has worked and works on countless fashion editorial shoots with the greatest image-makers, advertising campaigns and many, many catwalk shows.
Walking through the galleries, you see a beautiful overview that explains all aspects of the work of a hairstylist. From behind-the-scenes and the creative process to the final results, this inspiring exhibition shows personal polaroids, selfies, moving images and beautiful presentations of mannequins dressed in Vivienne Westwood and Chanel couture.
Also installations of mirrors and vanity tables showing backstage scenery, his equipment, and of course lots of wigs, wigs and wigs. McKnight explains his special trademark: “The wig is the contemporary transforming accessory”.
